Psychoanalytic Practice in the Community Clinic: Resistance, Collaboration, and Reclaiming our Lineages

“Psychoanalysis may be deployed either to reproduce or to deconstruct” the status quo (Chow & St John, 2021). In the U.S., this is evident in the relationship between “institutional” psychoanalysis and the persistence of analytically-informed work in community settings. Our aim is to focus and expand the conversation about what is already true: community clinics have long been the location of significant analysis and meaning-making about the overlapping realities of individual, family, community, institutions, and the larger social-historical surround. Community mental health has maintained the extra-ordinary truth(s) of psychic life in these interlocking contexts. This community analytic stance has amplified the capacity of those working within these systems and has freed us up to offer invaluable reflection and critique of mainstream, institutionalized psychoanalytic practice and theory. While psychoanalysis can be a tool for transforming communities, this presentation seeks to highlight how community work also transforms analysis. We come together in this event to foster a collaborative and stimulating conversation between the rich variety of analytic practitioners working in the community, the institute, or independently. Sandra Gaspar, M.S. LMFT,  Bilingual Clinical Supervisor at Westcoast Children’s Clinic, an Adjunct Professor at San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis in the program Coalition for Clinical Social Work, a Bilingual Consultant at A Better Way, Community Consultant for the CPT at PINC.

Eyal Matalon, PsyD, Bilingual Clinical psychologist in the Outpatient and Assessment Programs at WestCoast Children’s Clinic.

Eneida Sosa, PsyD,  Bilingual Clinical Psychologist in the Outpatient, Assessment, and STAT Programs and Supervisor in the Training Program at WestCoast Children’s Clinic.

Maria Seymour St. John, PhD, MFT,  Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco, where she serves as Co-Director of Training of the Infant-Parent Program (IPP) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
