“It’s The End Of The World As We Know It”: Apocalyptic visions and catastrophic revelations in psychoanalysis and cinema

Bion famously noted that “change is catastrophic”. Unfortunately, not changing may prove annihilating. We face a daunting array of forces which threaten not only the collapse of psychical life, but of life on the planet itself. This evening will look at the intersection of psychoanalytic and cinematic visions of our apocalyptic present and future. Bion, Winnicott, Kristeva, Grunberger and Freud will help guide us through the psychical landscape of disaster. While thinkers such as Timothy Morton, Timothy Snyder, Norman Cohn, Jonathan Franzen, and Zadie Smith will help grasp the historical and cultural landscape of the catastrophe we are already living (and dying) within. Dystopian tropes of modern cinema: the viral pandemic, alien invasion, asteroid impact, climate disaster, nuclear war, totalitarian power, and the Zombie film will provide ample ground for exploring how we envision the presence of catastrophe in our lives.

Course Objectives
After completing this course participants will be able to:
- Participants will examine the proposition that catastrophic thinking is not a cognitive fallacy but a realistic response to the present moment. Clinicians will link patient’s anxieties about psychological, social, and environmental catastrophe.
- Participants will list conceptualize cinematic depictions of apocalyptic disaster as narrative and imagistic ‘models’ that shape cultural and psychical responses to catastrophic change.
