The Edifice Complex: Towards a Trans-Mural Psychoanalysis

Bombarded by the multiple discontents of what passes for civilization, the psychoanalytic institute peers out now from its ivory tower and considers how wide to open its doors, aware it has become something of a gated community of the mind. But the psychoanalytic institute is not psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis thrives on a principle of transitivity, the site of exchange, on the border and threshold of otherness. This event seeks to put this principle to work. The initial paper by Francisco González will make a case for trans-mural psychoanalysis— one which grounds itself in the enriching and disruptive encounter with what lies outside its walls. The basic premise is that transecting institutional walls via creative collaborations can make places for a new kind of psychoanalysis: one that, in drawing on its history of emancipatory practice, is both more deeply itself and something not yet fully imagined. Our time together will also offer space to reflect on ways in which psychoanalytic thought has continued to evolve and thrive in communities outside the institutes. The subsequent panel will take up this principle as a living practice, as interlocutors Mahima Muralidharan, Daniel Yu, and Maria St John each provide their own take on a de-centered psychoanalysis. After presentations and exchange between the panelists, the audience will be invited into a larger conversation. The entire day will be moderated by Shubha Herlekar, who will contribute to the project of thinking psychoanalysis through and beyond its established walls.

After completing this course participants will be able to:

1. Define trans-mural psychoanalysis and apply that definition to conceptualize collaborative strategies in institutional life
2. Give at least two examples of the idea of transitivity from psychoanalytic theory
3. commit to promoting greater openness in the psychoanalytic establishment
