PINC Second Fridays – November

The Magician’s Desire: Illusion, Psychoanalysis and the Found-Lost Self

Jed Sekoff, PhD, In Discussion with Reyna Cowan, PsyD, LCSW

Friday Nov 12, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

2nd Fridays

alyerWe all face the world with a deep hunger to be recognized, just as we all turn away eager—or desperate—to hide and escape. The Magician, whether an escape artist, illusionist, expert at sleight of hand, or mind-reader, plays both sides of this coin. This is the realm of the “found-lost self”, the perpetual flow of our appearance and our vanishing. We will explore this terrain with the help of the magician-mentalists Derek DelGaudio and Derren Brown, alongside fellow “magicians” such as Winnicott, Milner, and Freud, with perhaps a touch of unexpected help from Claude Lévi-Strauss, Emily Dickinson, and Ingmar Bergman. Besides rabbits, our magician’s hat may hold further surprises involving thought-transference, mesmeric desire, as well as the centrality of doubt in the constitution of self.
