The Body Remembers/The Body Wants to Forget: Resignation Syndrome and Refugee Children

Zoe Grusky, PhD, discussant Reyna Cowan, PsyD, LCSW joined by co-director John Haptas

Friday, April 9, 6:30-8:30pm

Resignation Syndrome is simultaneously dramatic and paralytic. It’s a shocking phenomenon in which refugee children progressively retreat and disengage from the outside world by unconsciously self-inducing a comatose state. In the context of increasingly restrictive immigration policies, families seeking asylum spend sometimes years waiting to see if they will be detained or deported. The children in these families stop eating, talking and moving, eventually slipping into an unconscious state—their solution to their family’s unthinkable peril. Struggling parents are enlisted to provide extraordinary lifesaving care to their children during their somatic dissociated state of resignation. We will view the academy nominated short documentary Life Overtakes Me directed by Berkeley filmmakers Kristine Samuelson ad John Haptas. Then we will discuss the film, the responses by the children and the impact on the families and those who provide care.
