2nd Fridays – Discovering Biological Family Following Genetic Testing

Discovering Biological Family Following Genetic Testing: A Personal Story

Julie Melendi, Discussant Maureen Franey, PhD

Friday, October 11, 6:30-8:30pm

flyerGenetic Testing has become available to the general public in the last decade. People use it for different reasons, among which is finding biological siblings and parents. When the truth about one’s genetic make up and history is discovered it can be transforming to the core of one’s identity. Stories are published in the media about wrongfully convicted prisoners who have been released; a boy, who lost his family in Iraq, who was reunited with his mother 30 years later, and an accomplished author who found out her beloved father was not her biological father. Our guest, artist Julie Melendi will tell her personal account of her journey of learning about her family of origin and how it impacted her sense of identity after getting her DNA results. Psychoanalyst Maureen Franey, Ph.D. will engage in a discussion with Julie Melendi to understand the deeper effects this life-changing discovery had on her sense of self.
