Focus On – Couples on the Couch
Couples on the Couch: Thinking analytically about couple psychotherapy
Shelley Nathans, PhD
5 Tuesdays Feb. 19 – Mar 19, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
This course will offer a selection of readings about thinking and working analytically with couples and is designed for clinicians who are either beginning or experienced in doing couple psychotherapy. We will begin by examining some of the key theoretical ideas that are fundamental to psychoanalytic psychotherapy with couples, including the “couple state of mind”, projective identification and triangular space. We will discuss the idea of narcissistic relating and the problems some couples have with managing the differences between them. We will consider some issues of technique when working with couples, including the various purposes and types of interpretations that can be made, as well as the value of non-interpretive stances for the couple therapist.
