Erotic Transferences: What Do Countertransferences Illuminate?

Andrea Celenza, PhD

Saturday, November 3, 10 am - noon

flyerSome form of erotic transferences frequently arise in the course of psychoanalytic process, yet clinicians feel unprepared to cope with the level of desire and erotic material likely to emerge. The analyst’s countertransferences comprise a useful container to explore unconscious aspects of the unconscious field, if the analyst allows and attends to it. The morning will include aspects of erotic transferences and countertransferences as they relate to defensive structures, how countertransferences can foster or inhibit emergence and working through erotic transferences at different stages of treatment. Acquiring greater comfort in identifying and exploring the analyst’s own erotic countertransferences will also be demonstrated.
