The Foreign that Resides Inside

The event will consider how the experience of that which is foreign is an extension of an internal experience.

flyerGenerally, we want to think that the foreigner or foreignness is something that comes from the outside and needs to be defended against and banished from the inside. But what if the foreign resides inside of us and is like Georg Simmel writes in 1908, "... the foreigner who is not like the traveller who comes today and leaves tomorrow, but is the one who comes today and stays tomorrow". A review of Freud's and Lacan's writings will provide us with a path upon which we can discover the different renderings that lead us to that unconscious which governs us like an "internal foreign country", but one that we are consistently compelled to project outside of us.
