PINC Symposium with Michael Parsons

Psychoanalysis, Art and the Vale of Soul-Making

Michael Parsons with discussant Stephen Walrod

Wednesday, April 11, 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

Interpretation puts into words the analyst’s experience of bringing mind and heart together […] in the hope of bringing mind and heart together in the patient.

This, in the words of Michael Parsons, is the “soul-making” we engage with in the psychotherapeutic process. Parsons, a psychoanalyst with a rich background in philosophy, literature and the arts, explores the analytic project of finding an attentive stillness in our own minds in order to facilitate the patient’s associative process. In this presentation, he will display images from artistic masterworks that convey the qualities of “presence” that underlie the mental freedom and psychic complexity that support and develop through an analytic process. Stephen Walrod, a clinical psychologist well-versed in the arts will discuss and elaborate these ideas.
