Beyond Words

Beyond Words: The Creation and Power of Mental Images

Stephen Kosslyn, PhD, and Charles Fisher, MD, with discussant Maggie Zellner, PhD

Saturday Jan. 27, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

flyerThis event will examine mental images from two perspectives: objectively, as neuroscientists study their creation in the brain, and subjectively, as they are experienced in the therapeutic hour. Dr. Stephen Kosslyn will present seminal research on how images are created in the brain. Dr. Charles Fisher will discuss spontaneously occurring visual images in dreams, screen memories, "ordinary" memories, and waking experience. He will discuss the power of these images in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Dr. Maggie Zellner will lead a dialogue between the two perspectives, emphasizing how neuroscience might inform our therapeutic work, and formulating questions for the two speakers. After a general discussion, we will close with a clinical vignette involving the therapeutic use of mental imagery.
