Visiting Scholar Orna Guralnik

Ideology, dissociation, and the psychoanalytic project

Saturday, December 2, 10:00am–12:00pm

flyerMainstream psychoanalytic discourse essentializes, privatizes and views ideology as an extension of intra-psychic economy, while cultural theory complicates our understanding of the subject as always-already constituted by the socio-cultural matrix. This revision has implications for our theoretical concepts as well as how we think of the analytic frame. Dr. Guralnik will contextualize her work in which the socio-political is in conversation with mainstream psychoanalytic discourse. She will then introduce her theory positing dissociation as the primary mechanism through which ideology takes hold of the subject.
