Bright Radiance – Photography, Mania and the Maternal Elegy

Elizabeth Abel, PhD, Discussant Peter Goldberg, PhD, Moderator Reyna Cowan, PsyD, LCSW

Friday Nov. 10, 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

flyerWhat happens when psychoanalysis joins in conversation with photography? Photography theory, especially that of Roland Barthes, argues that light is a “carnal medium” that provides an umbilical connection between the photographed object and the viewer, recovering a neglected thread of early psychoanalytic discourse about mourning, in which “mania” is a prominent term. Focusing on a few scenes from Virginia Woolf’s memoir “A Sketch of the Past” and her autobiographical novel To the Lighthouse, in tandem with Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida and a case history from Karl Abraham’s, Abel aligns the concept of mania with the medium of photography and the affective particularities of mourning for a mother.
