Hollowing the Winchester Mystery House – Guns, Ghosts and the Ungrievable

Julie Leavitt, MD, Co-presenter Maria McVarish

Wednesday Oct. 25, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

flyerThe Winchester Mystery House,TM a sprawling historic residence located in nearby San Jose, offers a rich case study in how ghosts come to haunt the spatial and psychical ‘hollows’ of popular culture. The mansion, with its elaborately enfolded interiors, is reputed to be the haunted result of a grieving woman’s madness. In this presentation, spatial historian Maria McVarish and psychoanalyst Julie Leavitt discuss Sarah Winchester’s remarkable design in relation to larger frameworks of gender, space and the collectively un-grievable.
