Second Fridays - January
Outlining Alison Bechdel: Searching Drawing and Being Seen
Emily Seidel, PsyD, and Vivian Kleiman
Friday Jan 13, 6:30 PM – 8:45 PM, via zoom
Alison Bechdel’s career of queer cartooning began with her dynamic comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, which gave representation to the lives and politics of a group of lesbians. She followed with three graphic memoirs: Fun Home (which was turned into a Tony award-winning musical), Are You My Mother?, and The Secret to Superhuman Strength. Weaving together literature, personal history, and a wry sense of humor, her work is visually and intellectually captivating. In Are You My Mother?, she traces her search for maternal recognition, calling on Winnicott, Freud, Adrienne Rich and Virginia Woolf to assist her. In this program, we will look at how Bechdel makes use of the visual register to feel more alive. Emily Seidel will discuss Bechdel’s process of looking at herself and how Bechdel writes herself more fully into being. To make her story more intimate, we will show clips from Vivian Kleiman’s new documentary, No Straight Lines which features interviews with both Bechdel and the other godparents of Queer Comics. Seidel and Kleiman, along with moderator, Reyna Cowan, will contemplate and play with Bechdel’s idiosyncratic and stunning use of words and images.
