Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s television series, FLEABAG, has in two short seasons moved from the preserve of a few cognoscenti to near-universal acclaim. Originally a theatre piece, the show is too often wildly misdescribed as a comedic portrait of a sex addict. FLEABAG is closer to a tragic-comedy than a titillating sit-com, and an exploration of the series may not only tell us about our current cultural moment, but will illuminate questions about the psychical melodramas of families, the essential ambiguity of desire, and the shaping impact of heartbreak and loss. And then there are the matters of the hot priest, an analyst with dry skin, a wicked step-mother, a dead best friend, a suffering guinea pig, the travails of siblings, and the utter confusion of sex, gender, and desire. Fleabag is by turns sad, funny, appalling, devastating, and brilliant.

This program is 30 minutes longer than usual to provide a full two hours of CE Credit.

After taking this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe ways in which heartbreak and loss can become dislocated desire.
  2. List ways that Fleabag uses self-deprecation, pain and guilt to become in contact with herself and the audience.
