Violence, Destruction and Survival: Regression at the Level of the Basic Fault – A Day with Jonathan Sklar

Discussant Paula Mandel, Ph.D., Case Presenter Tom Wooldridge, PsyD, ABPP, Facilitator Denni Liebowitz, LCSW

Saturday Mar 28, 9:00 AM–2:30 PM

Postponed due to coronavirus

flyerJonathan Sklar is a leading scholar in the Independent tradition of British Object Relations. He draws on his rich knowledge of Winnicott, Ferenczi, Balint and Bollas in his work with traumatized patients, looking to build a traumatic narrative where representation has halted at the level of self-destructive action. In this deeply moving presentation, Dr. Sklar takes us through the layers of darkness with a severely disturbed woman as he helps her to represent her trauma. The body here is both the recipient and the source of her desperate communications. Dr. Sklar demonstrates a finely-tuned, courageous use of countertransference; ultimately his analytic “act of freedom” moves the case forward and allows transformation to occur.

After taking this course, participants will be able to:

  1. discuss Winnicott’s conceptions of hate in the countertransference, destructiveness, the analyst’s survival of destruction and use of the object
  2. describe alternatives to death drive as the origin of destructive
  3. behaviour
  4. describe psychotic and or perverse sequellae of trauma
  5. describe Michael Balint’s conception of The Basic Fault
  6. discuss clinical phenomenology of working with profoundly regressed patients
  7. describe the analyst’s handling of violent acting out in a session
