IntVS Jonathan Sklar – Psychoanalysis in Dark Times

Wednesday Mar 25, 7:30 PM–9:00 PM

PINC International Visiting Scholar Jonathan Sklar will address the application of social and political issues followed by discussion.

Postponed due to coronavirus

flyerIn the past, many psychoanalysts have largely avoided political commentary in and about society, usually citing the potential for it to be an intrusion into the privacy and confidentiality of the work in the consulting room. Analytic skills are perceived by many to be properly reserved for clinical use. But Jonathan Sklar joins the burgeoning number of analysts and institutes embracing the application of analytic ideas to urgent social and political realities. He suggests that today, with the continuing rise of nationalism, the return of autocratic or fascist regimes to Europe and South America, and the threat of autocracy or fascism in the US, it is urgent that psychoanalysts speak out. Analysts’ understandings of the mental mechanisms often found in the consulting room—those of cruelty, sadomasochism, and perversion, which are very often rooted in a harming early environment—can also be applied to the atmospheres that can seem to uncontrollably infect society, causing profound and dangerous splits and ruptures and the return of totalitarian politics again. Dr. Jonathan Sklar will address these issues with reference to his most recent book, Dark Times: Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Politics, History, and Mourning.

After taking this course, participants will be able to:

  1. describe the application of psychoanalytic theory to political and social issues
  2. discuss the urgency of such extra-clinical application in response to the rise of nationalism and totalitarian regimes
