Facing the Death Object: Unconscious Phantasies of Relationships with Death

International Visiting Scholar Joshua Durban, Facilitator Paula Mandel

Wednesday May 1, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM

flyerHow do we represent death, “the final scene”, in the unconscious? Might the many pre-symbolic anxieties-of-being we’re so familiar with—the dread of disintegration, loss of dimensionality, loss of vitality, loss of mind—be linked unconsciously to the ultimate terror of death? In our effort to avoid these terrors we may project death onto others and, as is so prevalent in our current political climate, try to annihilate the Other as a container of death. Durban draws on his training in a Zen monastery as he helps patients to work through the paranoid and depressive anxieties that impede acceptance of ultimate transience, that they might enter more fully into life.
