The Analyst as Listening-Accompanist: Desire in Bion and Lacan

Mitchell Wilson, MD, Discussant Peter Goldberg, PhD

Thursday, Nov 15, 7:30pm - 9:00 pm

flyerBion says “no” to desire; Lacan says “yes.” What gives? Isn’t an investigation of desire the heart and soul of psychoanalytic work? What about the analyst’s desire? In this presentation the question of the analyst’s desire is considered through a detailed comparison of Bion’s and Lacan’s pictures of the analyst’s position in analytic therapy. As will be described, this position is anticipatory and futural in orientation, open to the now-and-the-next of what is emerging in the hour. The analyst is, in this picture, a “listening-accompanist.”
