For a piece to synthesize and become a creative expression, we have to be inside what’s happening by being a part of it—by being a particle and a wave at the same time. This is why I love to work.” Danae Mattes is a sculptor who uses her hands to create “wall objects” and “evaporation pools” from unfired clay. In her video Terraqueous, dancers interact with wet clay that gradually dries and cracks over several weeks. Her abstract clay works conjure alluvial planes, geological beds, galactic dust heaps, volcanic bursts, and all things liquid—mud bubbles and salty waves—without being any of those things. Instead, Mattes expresses her reverence for the earth by becoming a part of it in the process of making her art. She plunges her hands in wet clay, yet her art works are curiously hands-off. This is because Mattes sets up a situation for natural processes to unfold. What determines the final result of any one of her wall objects is their relationship to gravity and time. Hers is a living process. In some sense analysts too try to put themselves inside. By listening to themselves as well as their patients, they tune into their own psyches and somas, while remaining hands-off. By doing so they enact a fluid process that evolves in relation to what their patients tell them with their bodies and their voices. As with Mattes, an analyst’s process flows in two directions at once.

CE Credits offered: 2

Course Objectives

After completing this course participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will examine the process of making art and link it to psychoanalytic thoughts on time and change over time.
  2. Participants will note the dynamics of Freud’s idea of how art works as the exchange of energy between the viewer and the art.
